Take a walk in the woods...
Inspired by Nature
Lots of our arts & crafts are inspired by the woods. Explore the woods with all your senses to inspire your ideas. Imagine you are there right now (or even better go a wonderful woodlands!) and think about all of the things that you can see such as the tree branches reaching up into the sky. Think about the sound of the rustling leaves as the breeze blows through the tree tops. Breathe in that earthy smell of soil and flowers. Feel the texture of the different tree barks.
Explore
Woodlands are exciting places to explore and have an adventure. Look for bugs and traces of wild animals, such as footprints; Examine the patterns on leaves; Make a den by tying a sheet to low hanging tree branches! Look out for birds and their nests. Can you identify any of the birds that you spot?
Create
- Immerse yourself in your surroundings and record your happy memories and discoveries by making some drawings of your favourite things in a sketch pad. Record some of the colours that you observe with pencil crayons.
- Take some photographs to look back on for beach art inspiration back home.
- Collect some fallen leaves, twigs and pinecones to make nature models with clay. This activity is a great way to exercise those decision-making skills and use your imagination.
- Paint some of your natural objects. This is a great way to fine tune those fine motor skills as it is much trickier to paint on uneven surfaces and objects.
- Use playdough to make imprints of the natural items that you find in the woods.
- Bark rubbings: Place a piece of paper over the trunk of a tree and use the side of a wax crayon, chalk or gently rub with a pastel, to create a picture of the bark.

Here are our three best woodlands inspired arts and crafts ideas for you to try...
Create nature pattern rubbings
Place paper on top of a natural object, such as a leaf or a piece of tree bark, and use the side of a wax crayon to gently rub over the top of the paper. The wax will collect on top of the patterns that stick out leaving you with a natural pattern on your paper.
Decorated Leaves
Collect some leaves and other natural objects from your adventure in the woods. When you get home, gently wash and dry your leaves. Decorate them by adding colours with pains and pens. You can also use pens to draw paterns and face on them too. Attatch them to some string or jute twine to create some leafy bunting to hang up.
Wooden Slices
We absolutely love painting on wooden slices. You can paint pattersn, animals or scenes. Its such a lovely medium to paint on and the textures of the rings in the wood add lots of character to your art work. You can make little animals with hand and footprints too!
